WEEKLY TASKS

There are three tasks each week:

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph.

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY

Introduce yourself to the class. You might consider some of the following questions: where are you from? What is your major? Why are you taking an online course? What is your favorite book? What is your favorite food? What is the farthest you have traveled from home? What did you do over Spring Break?

Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

  1. Hi. My name is Jentri, and I'm a liberal studies major. I enjoy the freedom of pace that online courses offer, and also the interactivity between students that you don't get in a traditional classroom.

I can't say I have a favorite book--I love to read, across all genres, and that is simply too narrow a question for me to honestly answer. ha ha

My favorite food, or type of cuisine is sushi. The farthest I've traveled from home was to China. Over Spring Break, I went wine-tasting with friends at the coast. Very relaxing and fun.

I look forward to learning about everyone else!

    1. Jentri, wine tasting at the coast sounds like a great way to spend your break! Good luck this quarter I look forward to working with you (:

    2. Jentri, that is great about being able to travel to China. Where does your next destination take you?

    3. Liliana---China was quite grand! I think my next adventure will take me to India. I've been fortunate enough to visit quite a few different countries, but have always dreamed of visiting India. The culture, food, day-to-day life, etc all seem so vibrant and colorful!

  4. Hello everyone. My name is Albeza Guerrero and I am 23 years old. I am from Tulare however I live in Delano as of right now. I am majoring in nursing and I am taking this course to satisfy the GWAR requirement. I have always loved helping people and I thought being a registered nurse was the perfect way I could do that, which is why I chose to major in nursing. This is my only online course this quarter and I decided to enroll in an online class because it worked better with my full schedule. I have taken online classes before and I have enjoyed them, so that was another reason why I decided to take another online class.
I do not have a favorite book, but if I had to choose a favorite genre, it would be fiction or mystery. My favorite food would have to be Mexican food, especially enchiladas. It is probably because I grew up in a house where the majority of the food cooked was Mexican food. I just love it and could never get tired of eating it.
The farthest I have traveled from my home is to Las Vegas, Nevada. My family and I usually go once a year to Las Vegas. It is so much fun and there are so many things to do there (besides gambling). Over spring break I mainly stayed home and spent time with my family. I did go visit some friends in Tulare a couple of times, and that was probably my main high light of my mini vocation.

    1. I admire your ability to become a nurse. I also enjoy helping people, my long term career goal is to become a speech pathologist. I considered the nursing field but I don't think I have the stomach to work in such a field. Good luck this quarter!

    2. That must be fun to go Vegas at least once a year. Is there any specific field you want to get into in nursing? Like ER, ICU, or labor and delivery?

    3. Hi Albeza,
I'm happy to have another nurse in the class as I can relate to your career choice. I have been a nurse for a couple of years and definitely love it. Are you in the nursing program at CSUB or still working on prerequisites? That's awesome that you get to go to Vegas every year. Ive only been to Vegas once but I would really like to go back. I hope you enjoy this quarter and good luck with the nursing classes!

    4. A Fellow Delanonian? I think that's how it should be typed. I'm from Delano as well, but born and raised. People always say I drive to far for school, but the drive really isn't that bad. 30 minutes on the freeway is was better than 30 minutes in traffic in my opinion.

    5. Hi Liliana, I would love to work in labor and delivery. I love babies so I'm going to try and get into that field. Thanks for asking.

    6. Hi Miranda, I'm happy as well to have another nurse in the class. I just applied for the Fall 2013 nursing program, so I will know in July if I got accepted in. What kind of nurse are you? Good luck this quarter too.

    7. Hello Angel, a lot of people tell me the same thing about the drive also but I really don't mind it. I actually like the drive since it gives me time alone to think.

  5. Hi there! My name is Jackie Clark, and I am 21 years old. I have a Rottweiler named Ruckus and I adore him. I am a senior at CSUB majoring in CAFS. I took this course to fulfill the GWAR requirement but was looking for an online course because I am expecting my first baby mid April. I am expecting a little baby girl and am very excited to meet her soon. I don't really have a favorite book, but I have been reading the Fifty Shades of Grey series. My favorite food would have to be spaghetti, but there has to be salad and garlic bread. But I am also a complete chocoholic, I love all types of chocolate. The farthest I have ever been from home would be a family vacation to New York about 7 years ago. I loved New York and I cannot wait to go back and do some shopping. This spring break I did not do any traveling, I stayed in town and spent time with family. Besides spending some quality time with family, I also worked diligently on finishing the babies nursery, putting things together and a lot of laundry. I am looking forward to this quarter and am excited to work with all of you. Best wishes and good luck this quarter.

  6. Hello.
My name is Miranda Martin and my mother named me Miranda after a character in a movie called Chances Are (1989). I am twenty-one, a senior at CSUB, a Business-Management major, and an Art minor. I am taking this online course for the GWAR requirement and the course is also a class that fits my schedule. I work as a librarian for a middle school and I very much enjoy literature.
I collect books, I am attached to them, and I have a hard time giving them up. I mainly read fiction and classics. I do not have a favorite book, but my favorite writers are Aldous Huxley (The Island/Brave New World), Eric Arthur Blair also known as George Orwell (Keep the Apidistra Flying/Burmese Days/1984), Jane Austen (Pride & Prejudice/Sense & Sensibility/Emma), and Gregory McGuire (The Wicked Years/Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister). Last week I read a newer novel titled The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin, which I highly recommend.
I do not have a favorite food. The farthest I have traveled is to Portland, Oregon. Portland is also where I am planning to move to after graduation. I go almost every summer and most of my family lives there. I am hoping to open my own business in Portland someday. There are many things I wish to do, but there are too many to list. Over Spring Break I spent my time in Cambria, Morro Bay, and Pismo with my family and my other half. The weather was amazing and I enjoyed my time.

    1. HI Miranda, It sounds like you had fun you went to several places. I also have some family in Portland, Oregon. I have been there like three times, unfortunately I’m not so close with the family out there. What I remember about the weather out there seemed nice. I don’t think I could ever move to anywhere else. I was planning to apply to colleges elsewhere but honestly the thought scared me, so I never applied. I too collect books but I don’t really have a huge variety. I had to change my room around so I could fit in another book case. It’s really cool that you have a minor in art; I love art but I’m not really good at it. It’s a really good hobby for me though because it’s relaxing.

  7. Hi everyone!!! My name is Odalix B. Carrillo. Due to the complexity of my name, of whose origin I am unsure of, I tell everyone to call me Odi. Just in case people are curious it is not because of the dog from Garfield. My nickname was given to me by a group of close friends in middle school, and it's stuck with me ever since. My name does however, have a meaning and that is "Strong Flower". I am currently a Junior at CSUB majoring in Psychology and minoring in English. I was born and raised in Long Beach, only having moved to Bakersfield 3 years ago.

I do not have a favorite book but it's not because I don't like reading. I love to read. Have loved it since I was a child and will probably love it till the day I die. I am enthralled by it. I like reading Fiction, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Historical Fiction, and Romance. I suppose a book that I can call my favorite would be Crime and Punishment. A beautifully written book with complex characters and wonderful plot line, Crime and Punishment probably intrigues me the most because of the psychology involved within its pages.

I am taking this course because I must not only fulfill my English minor, but because I really love English. Had I not majored in Psychology I would be an English major right now. My favorite food of all time is a dish my mom makes called "Arroz con Leche", which in English means rice with milk. For those who haven't had it, its kind of like of how oatmeal is made except it has rice in it. My mom also puts coconut pieces in it making it even more delicious.

The farthest I've ever traveled from home is Zacatecas, Guadalupe in Mexico. All of my mom's family lives in Mexico and during most of my childhood my brothers and I would spend our summer vacation there. I'm sad to inform that during Spring Break I did absolutely nothing. I worked Tuesday's and Thursdays, and while I did have Monday, Wednesday, and Friday off I was just too exhausted from work to go out. If anyone is curious now, I work as a Hostess at the IHOP located on Rosedale Highway by Kohls and Target. Winter quarter I typically worked Tuesday's, Thursday's, Saturday's, and Sunday's and I had class everyday. Due to the fact that it was Spring Break we were extremely busy and worked close to seven hour shifts.

Don't feel bad for me though. I did go out with friends Friday and Saturday of last week and so I did have a little fun. Hope other people's Spring Breaks were a little more fun than mine were.

    2. I originally wanted to double major in Art and English and attend Oregon State University. Was there any factors that influenced you to not be an English major?

I am a business major, but I want to own my own shop that integrates my other interests and passions. This might not sound amazing to others, but I want to own a cafe. Use locally grown produce, have a community garden, become a green company, sell local art, host gallery showings, poetry night, sponsor local artists/bands, sell used books (even books written by locals), host community event nights, et cetera. Sometimes I think that this will always only be a dream, but this dream is why I chose to major in business.

    3. Hey Odi,
What part of Long Beach are you from? I'm from the Bixby Knolls area of Long beach. It's cool to someone else representing the LBC!

    4. To Liliana: I do plan on moving back to Long Beach once I graduate. Right now I'm living with a friend. My family is back in Long Beach so I want to be with them a little while before I start graduate school.

To Miranda: I guess I didn't become an English Major because of my little brother. He had ADHD and having lived with him for my entire life I became intrigued by the psychological aspects of it and thus I became a Psychology Major.

To Rheal: This is going to be so bad but I have no idea what part I'm from. I'm terrible with directions and all I could tell you is that I grew up on the west side. But I am happy to know that I'm not the only person from Long Beach. Nice to know I'm not alone!!

  8. Hello there! My name is Nicole Spiropoulos and I am a senior at CSUB majoring in Human Biological Science. I recently just applied to the nursing program and now I wait anxiously until July to find out if I received a spot or not. I am taking this online course because not only does it satisfy my GWAR requirement, but because I find much joy in taking online classes. I was born in Lake Tahoe, Nevada but lived in good ol' Bakersfied since I can remember. I do not have a favorite book because the course material I have to read for my science courses consume a huge portion of my time. However, I've heard that the book 50 Shades of Grey is a must read. I love all types of food, but I must say I definitely have a sweet tooth! I do not travel very much because of school and work but when I do, I make it worth it. The farthest place I've traveled was to Mexico when I turned sixteen, it was a gift from my former foster mom. As for Spring Break, I stayed in town and tried to relax as much as I could, because I knew that school would come by in a blink of an eye! Hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break!

    1. Do you ever think about going back to vacation to Mexico? What part do you visit?

    2. 50 Shades of Grey is a good series. Do not read it around others because those who saw my facial reactions were interested. I had to pass around the book because I did not want to read it aloud to my family. They, of course, made the same faces I did. I have never read a book like that before. That is probably why I reacted in that manner and, if you haven't read a book like this either, then be prepared.

I would definitely go back to Mexico for vacation! I visited Ensenada but it was only for a short period of time. I would have loved more time to explore the city and to learn about the culture. I believe that is the whole point of going to different countries or even different cities; there is so much culture in the world and I would love to part take in all of it!

Yes, I've heard that 50 Shades of Grey is a wonderful series too! I know that this summer that book will be a great read while sitting next to the pool, because even though the quarter just started I know that I will not be able to read it until then. Thanks so much for the heads up! I will definitely keep you in mind as I'm reading it!

Im Liliana Reyes, I am 23 years old. I have two wonderful kids. I have a boy and a girl. I am a nursing and biology major. I would like to receive a Bachelors degree for both. This is my first quarter at CSUB and I transferred from Bakersfield College. I am taking this course because it gives me more time with my husband and kids. I also have to meet the GWAR requirement. I don’t have a favorite book yet but, I do like reading books that are based on true events. My favorite food would have to be Italian or Mexican. I don't have a favorite dish because its too hard to choose just one. The furthest I ever traveled would be to Zacatecas, Mexico to vacation with my family. I would love to visit the Bahamas some day. My spring break was great spent it with family, friends, and at work.
Looking forward to this class and getting to know my new classmates!

  11. Hey class,
My name is Rheal Goguen and I'm a physics major and plan on getting my Master's degree in nuclear radiation with the goal to become a medical physicists. I know, it's a mouthful, but it's really not that complicated. I will be the person dosing radiation onto patients with cancerous tumors and what not. See, it's not that crazy. I'm born and raised in Long Beach as well (Odi), and decided to come to Bakersfield for a change of pace in life and really focus on my education. In all honesty I'm taking this course for the credits because I have no other classes to take besides upper division courses and I need a "filler" course. My favorite book is 'The Alchemist' because it's extremely compelling and will keep you reading until the very last page. Also, it's a story everyone can relate to who is trying to follow their dreams and feels discouraged at some point in their life. My favorite food is pizza and beer (I'm over 21 don't worry). Who can't say no to a pizzaville or rusty's slice of pizza right in front of your face! I just recently came back from Hawaii with plans to go to Boston in July for the Boston Red Sox versus New York Yankees series at Fenway! I'm really amped for that! Lastly, I spent my spring break at Huntington Beach with my beautiful girlfriend and my puppy (he's a boxer). Enjoy!

PS: I had Dr. Schmoll for a history course and he was a really good teacher! (He's a stickler for tardiness and absences though ) HA!

  12. 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho?
I bought this book a while back, but I have not read it yet. I buy books all the time because I am a book hoarder, but now it has my attention. It has my attention after 'Tortilla Curtain' and 'The Tipping Point', of course.

It seems that many of us are twenty-one and over. No worries!
I have never been to the east coast. The only states I have ever been to are Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona. I would love to travel someday, but it has to wait. Who are you rooting for, Boston or New York?

    1. Yes, that's the book! It's really good, you should give it a read as soon as you have time. I hope you get to travel sometime, even if it's along the coast. California has some of the best coast line of all the states and even mountainous regions. I'm rooting for the Red Sox! My friend just got traded to the team so I have root for my friend!

      Delete
    2. That is what I love about California, but I plan on moving to Oregon after graduation. I will probably miss the California coast and mountains, but good thing Oregon neighbors California.

I wish I new someone who played in the major leagues. I played softball for 13 years (started when I was 5 and my last year was my senior year in high school)and wanted to play for Oregon State or the University of Oregon, but obviously that did not happen. Things change but I don't regret that I didn't because I had too many injuries to keep playing.

  13. I also have had Dr. Schmoll for a history course. It was one of my favorites.

  14. Hello my name is Jacqueline(1992), I am a Psychology major but still am not sure what God wants me here for. I dont like to read much, but I love to learn. I see everything that has to so with education as a beauty!

The furthest I have traveled was to Spain, Amsterdam, and Portugal. I went to San Francisco during spring break and just got a promotion at work.

I took this course because I love to write, yet I have the entire subject to learn. Of course this also satisfies my GWAR requirement, but that isn't my main reason.

I took this course online because i think it will work with my work schedule, meetings, and family alot more. I have struggled with time management, but until i finish my other life projects i have to give up seeing a live professor.

I wish everyone the best for this course and im looking forward to chatting with you all. :D

This is the first time I have ever taken an online course, so I'm both excited and scared to finally be joining the 21st Century. I am taking an online course, because this course was not offered in a one-to-one setting this quarter. My favorite book is "What Men Live By" by Leo Tolstoy, it is spiritually inspiring, and I have to admit I shed a few tears reading this short piece of work.
I love Mexican, Italian, Middle Eastern, and Indian food. I like good food in general.
The furthest I have ever traveled alone is to San Jose and San Francisco...so I have a long way to go.

  16. Hello everyone,

My name is Miranda and I’m from Visalia where I currently live with my wonderful boyfriend and dog whose name is Cheza. I have been a registered nurse for two years and wanted to pursue a higher education so I applied for the RN-BSN program at CSUB. I graduate this June from the program and couldn’t be more excited! I work full time nights so I needed a program that was geared toward the working nurse which is why I take all my classes online. I currently work on a med/surg floor that is designated for oncology but we tend to admit a wide range of patients. I have worked with patients who have renal issues, heart problems, and have even had OB patients. Nursing is definitely not for everyone, it has its good days and very bad days but I love what I do and feel I was definitely meant to be a nurse. When I’m not working or doing school work I enjoy reading whenever I can. I don’t have a favorite book but I do have a few favorite authors and read mostly fantasy novels. I also dance whenever I can and before I started my bachelor program I belonged to a belly dance troupe where we would dance at a variety of venues. I hope to join my troupe again once school is over and actually have a life again. I recently went to Mexico on a cruise which so far has been the furthest I’ve traveled. However, last week we bought tickets for our vacation in Hawaii after I graduate so that’s where ill be spending the beginning of my summer. As far as spring break I didn’t do much but work and catch up on my sleep as well as the few Walking Dead episodes I missed. This class looks very interesting and I’m excited to meet all of you and I hope this quarter goes by fast!

  17. Hello class, my name is Flor Elizabeth Juarez but I go by Elizabeth. I was born here in Bakersfield. I live with my parents, and I have an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Bakersfield College. I’m majoring in Criminal Justice and my minor is in Psychology. I should be graduating hopefully by the end of the year. I’m taking an online course because it works with my schedule and I wanted to take the class instead of testing out for the GWAR. I am a fan of the Twilight Saga I actually read all four books in a month and a half  I had a lot of free time at work and The House of Night novels I already pre-order the eleventh book. I love many types of foods for example: pizza, Mexican food, KFC, and Carl’s Jr. Well I’ve travelled to Mexico once or twice a year and to Iowa. I haven’t really gone other places, but I do plan to travel someday. Over spring break I spend time with my family and my niece and nephews. I took them to go see The Croods and The Wizard of Oz, they loved them. I also took my parents to go see G. I. Joe Retaliation which was really good. I work for Transwest Security as a security guard. I’ve been working there since 2005; it’s actually my first job. So I’m really proud I still work there.

It looks like we have a few things in common.
      ps. Good luck on graduating

    2. Thanks Stacy, they're very proud. Although my mom has expressed several times that she feels I have been in school too long. Being that I don't have a lot of responsibilities I feel there’s no rush so I’m taking my time. I have been in school since 2004, so having one degree isn’t that good; it took me awhile to choose my major. I switch my major several times, for example: business, math, journalism, and economics just to name a few, but I finally ended up with criminal justice. It's too bad you couldn't change your minor but sociology is also a good minor to have. Good luck to you too on your graduation.

  18. Hello my Stacy I am a Criminal Justice major and a minor in Sociology. I am twenty-one years old. This is my fourth year in CSUB. I am from Los Angeles. I moved to Bakersfield to get away from home. I was seventeen years old when I moved to the dorms. My idea of the perfect college experience was that it was going to be enjoyable and I didn’t have to work to obtain anything I wanted. However, moving on my own was one of the toughest decisions I have ever made in my life. Not having friends or family nearby gets you home sick and I wasn’t the exception. My freshman year fall 2009 I decided to join as many organizations on campus I could. By the end of the quarter I was active in more than seven organizations in campus. At the end I knew I had made the right decision of moving away from home to block any distraction from obtaining my main goal, to finish college to someday be a probation officer. At this point of my life I am very happy to be here in Bakersfield. I recently moved out to an apartment, every day I meet or go somewhere new I couldn’t ask for anything better. I enjoy dancing, eating, running and reading. My favorite book is “A Child Called it”. This spring break I didn’t do nothing exciting but work since now I have a lot of bills to pay and this is why I’m taking this online course.

    1. Nice post, Stacy. I wonder, how many of those seven clubs you are still in? Joining something is a great way to meet people and to form a community.

    2. Hi Stacy, wow that is in fact a lot of clubs. I used to be in some clubs at Bakersfield College, but when I transferred I didn’t join any at CSUB. I think I should get involved again. I think it’s really good that you’re independent and moved out on your own in a way, I wasn’t as lucky. Even though I like living at home my mom is very over protective. I once told her playing around that I was moving into the dorms and her response was “why? What are you going to do there that you can’t do at home” my response was study! Because she usually says it’s too late and that I should go to sleep already. As you said we have things in common; I too want to be a probation officer or BPD. How many classes do you still need to take for criminal justice? You seem to be on a very good track towards your goal, I hope you accomplish it soon.

  19. Hello every one my name is Marisol Rios and I am a senior at CSUB. I will soon be graduating with a major in Sociology and a minor in criminal justice. I am from Lamont Ca so this means i drive out here to school everyday; its not that bad as many people state though. At this moment I feel like I am at a busy point in life taking on senior seminar, work, and being more involved in organizations on campus. I believe that being involved can help an individual in many areas of interest but mainly help a person succeed. So far I am involved in three organizations and when I have the time I try to take advantage of other activities inside and outside of school.

Because I am Latina I do have many interest in activities, readings, and other events that extend the knowledge on my roots and where I come from. I was raised in Lamont and attended a school that has a high majority of Mexicans, and growing up seeing many different struggles in different areas among my people is what gave me a strong desire to help those who are in need of it. I do have a strong passion with helping those who I see need help, but I mostly enjoy looking outside the box and trying to understand why certain people do what they do, why they act the way they do and why they are in the situations they are in. Right away I knew sociology was the major for me and my main area after graduation is to help troubled youth.

I am taking this course not only because it is a requirement but to improve my reading and writing as well. Throughout my general ed classes I really believed I was a good, decent writer until I reached my upper classes. I now know that I need a little more help and improvement so I am hoping to learn more and understand how to write better. I do not have a favorite book so far but I am hoping to soon come across one as well.

I LOVE food and I have many favorite dishes but my main favorite dish would have to be my mothers chilaquiles; which is a mexican dish. The furthest I have traveled from home would have to be to the East coast. I have been to a couple states out there and loved it. If I had the money I would of traveled out there for spring break but because my money is tight at the moment I had to settle for a trip to Santa Monica. Although I was not able to go to visit the East coast over our break let me tell you that the perks of living in the west coast is that we have cold beaches, were the East has very hot ones with hot oceans.

  20. Hello everyone, my name is Tiffany To. I am a Human Biological Sciences major and am hoping to pursue further schooling after graduating CSUB this Spring quarter. I am from Los Angeles, CA and initially chose Cal State because of the captivating nursing program, but since then have discovered different interests. In my free time, I love to read, run, and eat! I am a huge buff for trying new things; experiences and entrees! I'd like to think that I have what some may call an open personality, I love meeting new people, and traveling to new places. I've traveled to a few states, but only been out of the country once! I look forward to meeting all of you, and exchanging thoughts with everyone! Nice to meet you all.

Well, I'm a Math Major here at CSUB, although I transferred here from BC with my Associates Degree in Communication. I am actually in the Blended Program which gives me a little head start on the credential program here at CSUB.

I am Married to an amazing woman and have 1 beautiful daughter with a 2nd daughter in the oven due this June. So I have a full family life which makes online classes a little more ideal, since I can type this here while my wife talks to me or being around the family.

What are you planning on doing with your Math major? I enjoy math, but I'm not really all that great at it, so I really admire those that are good at it and enjoy it! Best of luck this quarter with school and your growing family!

  22. Hello, my name is Cynthia Sanchez and I am a Liberal Studies Major. This is my first year at CSUB, transferred from BC as a junior. I have taken online course both at BC and CSUB. I must admit, this blog site is new to me; normally, I take online courses using blackboard. Hopefully, it will not be too complicated to use.
I am a single parent to two wonderful girls, 4 and 6 year old. I love to travel with my girls. Recently, we took a road trip to Canada. It was so much fun; the scenery was beautiful. I also enjoy taking them to sporting events, especially to go watch the SF 49ers!
I enjoy reading all types of books. I recently finished reading Fifty Shades of Grey, and have started reading, The Black Hand: The Story of Rene "Boxer" Enriquez and His Life in the Mexican Mafia. I’ll know by the first two chapters if I will continue reading or stop. I have not been able to finish reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
I hope everyone has a wonderful quarter!

    1. Hi Cynthia! I'm with you on the whole blog thing as it is very new to me as well. I've only ever taken an online course through Blackboard, so maybe we can help each other out if any questions come up! Your road trip to Canada sounds amazing! I've always wanted to visit Canada as I hear amazing things about it. I was actually planning to take a trip there over this past Winter Break, but I got the opportunity to travel to Europe for two weeks instead and just couldn't pass that up! I haven't read Fifty Shades of Grey, how did you like it? I tend to shy away from books when there is a big hype over them. I'm not sure why I do this, but I have heard other great things about this book, so maybe I should give it a try! Let me know what you thought about it!

    2. Cynthia---

I too know whether or not a book is going to hold my interest fairly early on. Unfortunately, I have a bookshelf full of books I've started and not been able to finish. However, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was one I read in a day---simply could not put down! I have not read the remainder of the trilogy, however. Tried to read book 2, but found it to be boring--it now sits on my bookshelf with all of "the others." hahaha.

  23. Hi everyone! My name is Kristen Barnett and I am a Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies major, with a minor in Psychology. I'm taking an online course because I prefer online courses and because I wanted to keep my availability as open as possible for my job. I unfortunately did not do anything overly exciting during my Spring Break. I mostly just caught up on sleep, which, if you're anything like me, you may consider to be pretty exciting! Hopefully my summer break will include something more exciting. I actually am hoping to travel to Romania over the summer. I've been twice before and I absolutely love it. I mainly spend my time there working in a hospital with abandoned babies, and it is probably my favorite thing in the world to do. If it works out, I hope to spend the better part of a year there once I graduate and before I start a real-life adult job! That job, however, will be somewhat similar to what I do in Romania as I plan to work as a Child Life Specialist in a Children's Hospital once I earn my degree. I won't graduate until next Spring, but I'm already counting down to that day! For quite some time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life, but now that I know I can't wait to get out there and do it! It is nice to meet all of you and I look forward to spending the rest of the quarter getting to know you!

    1. Hi Kristen,

That is so wonderful that you travel to Romania to help the children. It sounds similar to what my boyfriend did when he was younger in his youth group at the church. He has also been to Romania and would help in the nurseries with the babies and was also helping to rebuild the nursery. He has told me so many awesome stories about the people their and showed me a lot of pictures. We have talked about going together at sometime so that we can help and he can revisit since its been years since hes been there. I really hope you are able to make it there this summer and I applaud your good cause. Thanks for sharing!

    2. Hi Kristen
I admire the work you do with children in Romania. It is truly a blessing having people like you willing to care and give love to those who most need it. I am glad you have set your goals, you will do great!

    3. I believe it's great that you work with the babies in Romania. Caring for others is not for everyone, and I'm glad you can find it in your heart to care for the babies in those nurseries.
I too will not get to walk until next spring and I cannot wait until the day. At times I wish I would have took the opportunity to study abroad and I remember that I am just were I should and need to be. Keep up the good work and we always need more people to care not only for our children but for other children as well.

  24. Hey everyone! My name is Annette Alfaro and I am 21 years old. I was born in San Bernardino CA, but only lived there for a few months. After living there my family lived in Mexico until I was five. Then we moved back to California but lived in Oxnard this time. Five years later, we moved to Bakersfield and we have been living here for almost eleven years. Now that I’m 21, we are all moving back to Oxnard in July because we enjoy the beach weather. I am a CAFS major, which is basically child development. I’m taking thins English class to meet the GWAR requirement. I chose to take the course online because I like how flexible online classes are. I can log on anytime during the day and I don’t have to wake up super early to be in class.
I don’t have a favorite book, because I really don’t like to read. I really don’t have time to read for enjoyment either. My time is taken up by school, work and of course homework.
I have so many favorite foods. They are mostly Mexican dishes. I really enjoy all the typical Mexican food. I love enchiladas, tamales, posole and all of that stuff. Aside from that, I love to eat fruits. I like just about any type of fruit and eat them everyday. Strawberries, mangos and pineapple are my favorites.
The farthest I have traveled from home is to Mexico. I was very young so I don’t remember any of it.
I spent my spring break in Oxnard with my mom, sister, and brother. Since my youngest sister is attending CSU Channel Islands they have been living in Oxnard since August. I spent the whole week there and had some friends over for the weekend. We went hiking in Ventura and then went to the beach the next day.

    1. Hello Annette, I totally agree with you on the Mexican dishes I love them. I usually try to go to Mexico every year; I love the food and sometimes I eat two or three of those dishes in one sitting. I ate small portions of course. I’m glad that you’re talking an online course, it really isn’t that hard. It is intimidating when you don’t understand something and you have no one to ask but instructors have office hours. Make sure if you need anything you go see the professors, they’re usually very helpful when you go see them. Oh and one of my best friends lives in Oxnard, it is really nice out there. The only bad thing is that I can’t really be around that weather I usually get sick if I go to any beach weather area. I’m really sensitive to cold. I have to wear coats or a sweater to prevent getting sick, but it’s really nice. I love that there are a lot of beaches by Oxnard.

  25. Hi all! My name is Veronica Almanza, I am a second year student in the Masters in Social Work program. I was born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico. I came to the U.S. on vacation then met my now husband and been happily married for almost 10 years. We have two children a boy(5)and a girl(3) who keep me busy most of the time and one of the reasons I decided to take this course online. The second reason is that English is my not my first language thus I need to improve my writing skills. I still have a long way to go and I am positive that this class will help.
My inspirational book is the Bible. Although, I enjoy reading different genres one of my late passions is reading on trauma and grief. I may decide to work in the foster care field, those kids go through awfull experiences, so I would love to be a positive infuence in their lives.
Among the food I like are Mexican and Chinese, I enjoy cooking and baking because it relaxes me besides I love food.
With my family we really enjoy traveling, we are always looking for new places to visit. The farthest I have travel is to the U.S. I ususally go to Mexico once a year because my entire family lives there. I miss them and also want my kids to interact with their grandparents and have good memories of them.
Unfortunatelly, I did not get to enjoy my vacation during Spring Break, my kids got sick then me, and finally my husband. Not much fun.
This is who I am, hope we all enjoy and learn a lot from each other, Dr. Schmoll and this class.

    1. One more thing, I aquired most of my education in Mexico. In fact the masters counts as the first time I attend school here in the U.S. I took some ESL classes in the past, but I believe the masters has helped with my improvement.

    2. The children in foster care do go through terrible things especially here in kern county. There really needs to be more people that care about what seems to be the forgotten children of kern county. My husband does not work in the foster care area however he does work with rehabilitating troubled youth here in kern county and it is amazing what positive influences can do for these children. Most yearn for someone to care about them and there future. And actually that's all that it takes to make a difference, I believe.
My family lives in Oklahoma so I can sort of relate to the distance from family. I want my kids to grow close with their cousins but it is really hard because they feel like strangers when we go visit. Maybe it won't be so bad once they are older.

  26. Hi class! My name is Adia Turner-Magsby and I am a senior in Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies. I don't graduate this spring however my requirements for graduation will be fullfilled this fall. I'm very excited about graduating as it's been a long journey. I am taking online courses excluively this quarter in hopes of easing time conflicts with my children.
I am a parent to two gorgeous children, a boy (3)and a girl (8 months). Everyday is exciting in my household with my two kiddos. Online courses will give me the flexibility my family and I need to go about our daily dealings.
When I do get a chance to read, I like to read romance novels. They are always engaging and interesting. I used to read more before having children and going to school, concurrently that is. So hopefully I will have the time for reading these days.
I didn't do anything too fancy for spring break. My husband's neice stayed a few days with us; she and my son are 1 year apart. We did lots of Easter activities and crafts. My husband and I took them to The Wild, Chuck E Cheese, the park, and to see the movie The Croods. I also worked on my latest hobby, bow making. I enjoy making bows for my daughter's outfits. I'm planning on selling them soon so I have just been making plenty extra for stock but the plan is to custom make the majority of them.
I am originally from Oklahoma. I moved here with my husband three years ago. Before we had any children we used to travel around the country all the time. The furtheset I'd say I have been from home is Washington state. We plan to do more traveling when our children are older so that it will be easier to actually enjoy the vacation. That's my life in a nut shell. Looking forward to experiencing this new online class format, it is very different from blackboard. I'm praying that I will be able to be successful.

  27. Hello, all. My Name is Sean VanSickel. I am an EMCE Major, and I graduate this Spring. I plan on spending a year teaching in Beijing starting this Fall, after which I will pursue my MA and Ph.D. in Modernist American Literature. I am currently working as an A.C.E. certified personal trainer, and I have been working in the fitness industry for a while now.

My Spring break mostly consisted of work, that perilous affliction that has cursed me since I was but a lad. I can honestly say that I love what I do and I truly enjoy my job and my education. Many are not so lucky.

I enjoy working out (kinda goes with the job...) as well as writing and performing original music. I have been fortunate enough to have been voted the featured artist at a local coffeehouse, and I played a 40 minute gig 2 weeks ago, my longest set in years. I mostly play guitar these days, but I am proficient in bass (electric and upright) piano, percussion, mandolin, and am considered a "bad" drummer. I also enjoy sartorial pursuits, and am beginning to discover the joy of a well-tailored wardrobe.

I'm hoping to get my certification to teach this summer! Also, I'm a singer and musician. I play keyboard/piano, and would love to learn to play the guitar also.

  28. Hello everyone!

My name is Derrick Perkins and I am in my last year at CSUB. I am a Political Science major, but I am not looking to go into politics. My goals are to eventually become a consultant to businesses and organizations that would like to do business in China. Understanding the politik of both the United States and the People's Republic of China are at the heart of my goals. Many of the businesses that I will be seeking out to consult will have no clue as to how to even begin the process to do business with the coming Asian Economic giant. As a secondary hobby I would like to write books about the Chinese military with emphasis on its navy. I am an avid reader and love to learn. I must warn all of you that I am a 'realist' when it comes to both domestic and international affairs. However I like to consider myself a compassionate conservative. 29. Hello, my name is Stephanie Abdallah and I began attending CSUB 2 years ago and am a nursing major. I am 35 years old and have been married to my husband Elias since I was 19 years old. He likes to say that he married a teenager! I was attending Bakersfield College when I met my husband (who was a youth pastor at the time), and I decided that I wanted to get married and help him with youth ministry rather than finish up my degree as a registered nurse. Our life has been quite a journey, and I wouldn't change anything! We have 3 awesome boys who keep our life exciting and fun: Matthew (age 14), Joshua (12), and Caleb (10). I recently applied for the CSUB nursing program and am now working on my upper division general education courses. I attend CSUB full-time, and I also work 32 hours a week as a retail merchandiser. Elias and I have been on staff as Pastors of Family Life at a large local church for 4 1/2 years. I enjoy singing and playing piano, I love to read (my favorite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers), and I practice yoga 3-4 times per week. The farthest place that I've traveled to is the Caribbean. This summer we are taking our family to the Bahamas, and it will be my children's first time taking a cruise. I am looking forward to honing my writing skills during this class.

  30. Hi,
My name is Jennifer Garay, I am currently twenty years old and a junior majoring in Sociology with a minor in psychology. I am taking this online class in order to meet the GWAR requirement as well as to try to improve my writing skills. I have taken a few online courses and have found them a bit challenging because I had to discipline myself in order to get things done, but I don’t it will be a problem for me like it was in the past. I don’t really have a favorite book but I do like to read non-fictional books. I am, however, looking forward to reading Tortilla Curtain because I have heard great things about it from my sister but never had the chance to read it, so hopefully it is an interesting read.
I come from a Mexican heritage, so I would have to say that my favorite food is Mexican food. If I had to choose my favorite dish, however, it would have to be my mom’s posole. There is just something about it that just tastes delicious especially after a long day of work or school. The furthest that I have traveled is Nayarit, Mexico, where my parents are from. I would have loved to go to Mexico over spring break but being a college student it was definitely not in my budget, so I settled for stating home and just relaxing.
