WEEKLY TASKS

There are three tasks each week:

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph.

WEEK TEN BLOG ENTRY

Here it is...the last week of blog writing. So, for this week we are going to do something brilliant. Write two numbered responses in your blog.

1. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS SUMMER?

--and--

2. WHAT WOULD YOU DO THIS SUMMER IF I GAVE YOU A MILLION DOLLARS?

66 comments:

  1. 1. My summer plans are will be varied and adventurous, with the underlying theme of relaxation throughout. Each year, my family and I create a “Summer List” of things we’d each like to do or experience over the break. I’ve yet to create my list yet but know it will involve travel of some type. In addition to pre-planned activities, as a family, we spend a large portion of time during the summer outdoors. We can be found biking, swimming, geo-cashing, hiking, and enjoying the long nights of summer with backyard campouts. I usually also spend time with my son choosing a particular topic or person he’d like to know more about during the long months of summer. We research the topic together with trips to the library or browsing through informative websites that pique his interest. All of this leads up to a “real-life” experience. For instance, last summer he was enamored with a particular author. We read the books together, researched the author’s life, and finally, attended the LA Times Festival of Books where he was able to meet and chat with the author. It was a memorable experience for the whole family. I too do the same. I’ve a list of things I’d like to know more about, and usually try and tackle at least a few each summer. The life and death of Marie Antoinette is first on my list this summer. I’ve already got my hands on a popular biography about her life that I can’t wait to begin!

    2. If given a million dollars, my first order of business would of course, be a thank you note. ☺ After all of the formalities of financial advising, etc, I’d be ready to spend! I prefer experiences to material things, so I would travel the world. After that, I would buy land in a State where livestock outnumber people, and built a farmhouse resembling the architectural beauties of Gettysburg. Because I’d not have to worry about money, thanks to my investing, I wouldn’t really farm. I would however fill the land with enough crops to support my family, and plenty of adorable farm animals. A few cows, sheep, pigs, and of course plenty of hens. Since a child, I’ve always romanticized the “farm life,” possibly due to over-reading Laura Ingalls-Wilder novels. Of course, if it wasn’t as cheery and picturesque as I’d imagined, I could afford to change my mind. ☺

    1. Money buys comfort and security, not happiness, and it seems like you are making good use of that security! I grew up living the "farm life" though... it might be a good thing that you will be able to afford to change your mind.

  2. 1: I will work. I will be working at least two jobs, possibly three, applying to graduate schools, and finishing up all of my international paperwork in order to go abroad to teach in Beijing in the Fall. I also plan to work out like a crazy man, although I have not yet decided if I want to lean out to around 8% body fat or focus on strength and finally get that 400lb deadlift.

There will also be much reading. I plan to read all of the Faulkner and Hemingway novels that I have not yet read, as well as Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Hawking's A Brief History of Time.

    2. Well, I would only work one of the jobs. I would spend 5k on frivolous things like watches, gym equipment, and some motorcycle upgrades. I would spend another 5k on a few trips around the states, spending time in San Francisco as well as the East Coast.

The rest of the money gets invested. After a few years of not touching the money in while living overseas, I'll come back and go to grad school, getting my PhD at the best school I can get into. I will live off interest until I have a comfortable salary.

Or I'll go to Vegas and put it all on Red.

And that's funny, you can never go wrong with Vegas!

    6. You will be having an interesting summer and fall. I wish you the best in Beijing. Vegas is always a fun city to visit! :)

  3. 1. After graduation this summer I will be attending an institution to earn my Phlebotomy license. This is to prepare me for the graduate program that I will be applying for this fall to attend fall of 2014. I also plan to continue interning at the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer center. Towards July though, ill be heading back to Northridge, CA and spend more time with family.

    2. On the off chance that I do receive a million dollars, I probably would buy myself something frivolous for starters (just being honest). But I will not forget to give back to my family. It has always been my dream to buy my parents a house and I'd contribute a majority to them. It may take all the power in me to give up this tremendous gift, but I'd like to give back to my family above everything.

  4. Summer is almost here. It’s that Time of the year that we go to the beach, pools, and amusements parks with our friends and families. What I like doing the most is going out to a lake barbeque with all the family and friends. It’s always a memorable adventure when we spend time with the people we love. Everything about summer is so much fun with the exception of our bodies being sweaty and burnt. Being hot is the least of my worries because there’s always a lot of fun ways to cool off. Unfortunately this summer won’t be fun for me what’s so ever. This summer I won’t be doing anything special or fun. All I will be doing this summer will be working as much as I can to pay most of all my bills. I want to be debt free to release some stress off my shoulders. I have to be ready for fall quarter/semester because I know I have to be ready for the tough classes I will be taking. On the other hand if you were to give me a million dollars I wouldn’t have to work as much this summer. It would be a time of relaxation and stress free. I would split the money in parts. Some of the money would be for school, another part for my mom a small amount for me and my bills and if I have more left over I would save it for future emergencies. I wouldn’t have enough to thank you with. The sad part about it is that I won’t be receiving a million dollars I just have to accept the reality. I know I’ll have many other summers to do as I wish but for now it will just be working hard until I accomplish everything I want.

  7. 1. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS SUMMER? Well i have so much to do this summer that one question would do for the assigment. I have a trip to Brazil planned in July for two weeks. I also have a Backstreet Boys concert to go to in Las Vegas in September to celebrate my cousins birthdays and to spend some time together. I also have planned to learn how to play the guitar, sing, and dance professional. I am going to do fundraisers for the youth group at St. Joseph church so that we can have funds to go to retreats, concerts, and fun activities. The last thing i have planned for this summer is to get a head start on my next quarter homework. I just hope my new proffessors get started on that syllabus so i can get started right away.

    2. WHAT WOULD YOU DO THIS SUMMER IF I GAVE YOU A MILLION DOLLARS?
I was given a million dollars i would search for a peice of land to start building my new home. i would pay for my two friends to go with my to Brazil. As for the youth group i would donate a few thousands to the church for all the electricity we have used and donate a few thousand to the youth group. i would have many meeting with the leaders to set up trips and ways of investing the funds for the future of the church and youth group.

  8. 1. Well my baby girl "Emma Love Martinez" was just born last Thursday, so my summer will be consumed about being the best daddy I can be. I am a first time parent to a newborn, but not a first time dad, since I have a step daughter with my wife. However, she wasn't a newborn or even a baby, so learning how to be a daddy to a baby should keep me pretty occupied. I will also be working, and tutoring as I do plenty of tutoring over the summer for those parents that don't want their kids to go a full summer with some educational time.

    2. Well, a million dollars is a lot of money, and I have know just the things to do with this money. First off, I will buy the best seats at "Levi Stadium" (which is the new 49ers stadium to open in Santa Clara). Since I am a die hard 49er fan, I will purchase these seats for the entire life of the stadium, and possible a whole row, for friends and family... but that's a mabye. I will then purchase land and build the house of my wife's dream. She hates cookie cutter homes that look like the neighbors down the street. I would then buy and fix up a 1973 Corvette Stingray. I wouldn't buy the car done, because it wouldn't be to my specifications. So I would buy it bare bones and have the work done to it as I see fit. I would then pay of my mom's house, my wife's mom's house off, and put the rest in some sort of investment. Although, I would still work as a teacher, because that's what I love to do.

  9. What am I going to do this summer? Well... not much. I'll be waiting to see if I got into the nursing program. Which I really, really hope that I get in. I do not find out until early July. So I'll be anxiously waiting. I will also be working, working and working. I plan to work as much as I can this summer because with my schedule for Fall '13, I doubt that I can work all that much. I'm going to be putting in all the hours I can. My sister is also expecting her first baby next month, so I will be with her a lot too. I'm so excited!

If I was given a million dollars this summer, I will pay off my loans that I have and go to West Coast University for the BSN program. West Coast University is a private school and they charge a lot, I mean a lot of money. I will also want to travel around the world. I would like to visit Australia, Europe, South America, Israel and Egypt.

  11. This summer I plan to do a lot. I really want to start playing the piano again. I took piano for four years in high school and I haven't really played it since then. I want to dust up the old keyboard and get back to it. Aside from the piano I want to learn how to play the guitar. I don't have enough money for lessons but I'm not letting that stop me. I plan on teaching myself to play the guitar. I also want to teach myself to speak Japanese. I already know a couple of words and simple phrases but it's really hard to remember a lot of them. I also plan on drawing some more as well as painting. I have a lot of things I want to do this summer and I'm hoping that I will be able to do them.

  12. 1. On June 16 I am moving to Portland, Oregon. I am taking a break from school for a while after this quarter is over, and I will be looking for work in Oregon. I decided to do this because I have always been the type of person who does not stop, just works, goes to school, and gets stressed. I hardly take the time to enjoy the simple things. I want to take some time this summer to find a job, but to also be a little adventurous.
While in Oregon I plan to:
    1. Go to Mt. Hood to see the Timberline Lodge (where they filmed The Shining)
    2. See the International Rose Test Garden
    3. Go to as many Micro breweries as possible (Portland is the #1 city for micro breweries)
    4. Go for a run every (almost every; trying to be realistic with myself) morning to enjoy the scenery and breathe in the fresh air
    5. Look for work
    6. Go kayaking or tubing down the rivers
    7. Go bicycling (#1 city for bicycles)
There are so many things to name, but these are just the few that I can think of right now.

    2. A million dollars. I would pay off the loans I have right now. I would put away for the rest of my schooling when I go back. I would buy a house for me and my family (I grew up in a country family, so I would buy some land). I would open my own business because that is what I want to do with my life. I would put away money for my younger brothers and sister so that they would have help when it was their turn to go to college. I do not know what I would do with the rest of the money, but probably invest, travel, and use for necessities.

  13. This summer I will be spending it at school again, I will be taking a biology course. This summer before the summer quarter begins I will be planning a family vacation for my kids to enjoy. We will be planning a trip to Disneyland and Universal Studios. If possible, I would like to spend the summer with less stress and more fun. I would like to spend the summer in a fresh pool with my family and relaxing. I will also try to keep myself hydrated as much as possible because each year the heat gets uglier and uglier. I will be preparing myself for my upcoming baby and hope to have a good summer without going super hormonal on everyone. I would love to spend my summer cool, calm, and collective.
If Dr. Scmholl gave me one million dollars I would be super happy and speechless. I would first pay off my house, cars and school. Then I would open a savings account for all my kids each having 100k for feature financial security. And I would still be left with a lump sum of money and, of course I cannot resist donating to charities because that would definitely put a smile on my face and others. As for the remainder of the money I would save it up and take a family vacation because we all need it. I would also love to go on a shopping spree for new clothes, shoes and purses.

    1. Your summer before school starts sounds so fun! I know you and your children will have an amazing time in Disneyland! I'm a huge Disneyland fan and go as often as possible. Make sure you watch the Aladdin show in California Adventure while you're there... it is amazing and even though I've seen it many times, I always make time for it while I'm there! It's a must!

    2. I hope you stay cool this summer! Bakersfield is not the place to be if you want to escape the heat! And yeah just thinking about getting this kind of money makes me wish it were true!

  14. This summer I will be working full time like I do every summer, because it is only time where I can save up some extra money. Besides working full time, I will wait anxiously for early July to roll around to see I got into the nursing program. I will also be purchasing my first car from a dealership, and I'm very nervous to say the least. And lastly, my boyfriend and I will be making an extended trip to Reno to visit my aunts. We usually wait and go between the months of July, August, or September because it is the time when many festivities within the community will be taking place. This is a time when I really enjoy going to Reno, and every summer it get a little harder to leave. I can definitely see myself moving to Reno, one day in the future. For right now, my home is right here.

If I was given a million dollars I would not know what to do with it all. Of course I would spend a little bit of it on myself (just as anyone would do). It would purchase a new car (alot sooner), because of all the recent car problems I have had for a while now. I would buy my mom a house to finally live a normal life, this is because my mom is an honest woman and just wants her life to be simple. I would definitely help out my brothers, my boyfriends family. This is because they have been so good to me since the day I met them. And the rest of it, I would invest, travel, and help where I can.

  15. 1. I will be working this summer, and that's about it. Now doesn't that sound exciting? I wish I could say that I will be doing something amazing and fun, but really I'll just be working as much as I can in order to save money before I graduate next year. I will most likely spend the time that I'm not working drinking margaritas by the pool and helping my best friend plan her wedding, so at least that part of it will be fun!

    2. If I was given a millino dollars, I would put a bug chunk of it in savings, give my parents a pretty decent amount of money, and leave immediately after (ok, I would wait until after finals!) for Romania and spend my entire summer there working with the babies that I so love. While there, I may spend some time seeing other parts of Europe that I've not yet been to. As I'm typing this it is sounding more and more fun... anyone have a million dollars that they would like to give me?!

  16. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS SUMMER
Setting myself up for making Chief is my entire goal for this summer.
First task I'll complete in July will be a Diving Supervisor course in Coronado Ca. The course is 2 week course that will help me hone my skills for running dive sides and completing under water projects. Additionally I will gain more knowledge on how to better diagnose and treat a stricken diver that surfaces with decompress sickness.
Second task I'll be completing will be my Diver Surface Warfare pin. I've already completed the written examination portion and now only have to have a board convene to deliver a four hour interview/oral examination. I'm ready for the board and just waiting on them to convene.
My third and last task is to better prepare my package for the Chiefs board. I've been passing all of my E-7 Chief examination tests and have been missing the things I mentions previously to make Chief.
I have been working with my chain of command on my career development board with the goal of making Chief this year. Once I graduate this year from school I’ll finally have the time I need to finish off the last three years of my naval career and retire. With the performance evaluations I have and the tasks I'll be finishing this year. We are confident I will make Chief by January of next year.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO THIS SUMMER IF I GAVE YOU A MILLION DOLLARS?
Since Professor Schmoll isn’t my spouse he can’t gift me a million dollars without Taxes. Also its over the $13,000 tax free limit. There for I would have to say that the first thing I would do is go to Morgan Stanley and talk about Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts. The whole idea here is to avoid paying taxes or to limit the amount of taxes paid. Generally speaking donors pay the taxes for the donee. In this case I'm going to assume that Professor Schmoll already feels that he is being nice enough to me and doesn’t want to pay taxes for me. So, the only logical sounding idea is to speak with the professionals and spend the summer researching the best option for receiving a $100,000,000 gift after this summer. (Accounting is my major)
Since I wouldn’t be receiving the money any time soon, I'd finish my business proposal and complete the paper work for my business plan. It would be awesome to give people jobs and turn the money into a business that would provide more than $100,000,000 in pay checks.

  17. 1. This summer I do not really have plans for anything big. My family usually takes a summer vacation every summer and as of right now we have not decided where we will be going. I know some of the options we have talked about were Disney Land, Las Vegas, or San Francisco. I personally hope we decide on Disney Land because I truly believe it is the happiest place on earth and who doesn’t like going Disney Land. I know I do. I know this summer it will be a little bit more memorable for me because my daughter is going to start school for the first time at the end of July so I want to spend every ounce of time I have with her before she does. Other than that I plan on relaxing and swimming a lot to be beat this heat. Lastly, I am just really going to enjoy not going to school.

    2. If you gave me a million dollars this summer I would definitely travel to places I have always wanted to visit. Some of those places are New York, Bora Bora, Hawaii, Paris, Miami, Greece, and the Bahamas. I don’t know if I would be able to visit all those places in one summer so I would for sure go to Bora Bora and Greece. Those places are so beautiful and it would be an amazing opportunity to travel abroad to actually experience them in real life. I would take my whole family with me and we would do everything we wanted to do on those vacations whether it is snorkeling or paragliding or stuffing our faces with food we have never had before. I would also buy my mom a house and put money away for my daughter. The final thing I would do is make my dream house a reality by building it from the bottom up.

I have one trip planned with my family toward the end of July. We will be vacationing for a week at Lake Tahoe. I hope to relax and enjoy my time away from school and work. My daughters have a list of things to do in Lake Tahoe (relaxing is not one of them). Beside Lake Tahoe, I have no other plans. I will be making plans as the weeks come by. My summer plans will definitely change if you would give me a million dollars. I would be adding and making changes to my house and of course, helping my family out with their finance. With the most part of the money I would travel. I’ve always wanted to see the Niagara Falls from Canada and travel to Europe. I have visited a few countries, but would like to France and Italy. The money would help bring my entire family to join me. I would also take the Disney cruise, even though some ships have had problems. I enjoyed my last week long cruise. 19. 1. This summer I will be doing nothing in special. The first thing on my to-do list is to get my son kindergarten ready. Teaching him to spell his name, recognize his numbers 1-30, recognize his alphabet, and how to tie his shoes. As for my daughter, I will be teaching her how to properly hold a pencil, try to sing her ABC's,and to say her name. I also will be doing some decluttering around the house.
Both of my kids' birthdays are this summer, three weeks apart. So we will have back to back parties for them. There will als be a couple of trips to disneyland and many trips to the beach. My son absolutely loves the beach. We also spend our time in the pool while their dad is at work. My son has a cousin who is 10 months older than he, so she will be spending plenty of nights.
We will probably end the summer by taking a trip to Oklahoma and Texas to visit my family. My husband wants to take our son to Louisiana to show him where he was born. However, that trip may be more fun for us than him. Especially, getting a chance to see our old college buddies as most of them are still in the area. We left once my husband graduated. And here I am finishing my education at Cal State.
    2. If I were to recieve 1 million dollars from Dr. Schmoll, I would start off with the longest hug and a huge smile on my face. Then I would pay off my husband and my school loans. I would then pay off our cars and bills. I would then by my family a house for us to grow in and be comfortable. Nothing too outrageous. I would give our parents a good amount to thank them for always being there for us. Then we would all take a vaction to a place that has a significant amount of history. After all of the frolicking, we will get down to business and begin investing for our children's future.

  20. This summer I plan on catching up on my sleep and getting my life back to normal! I'm not sure how I'm going to adjust to having actual days off when I'm not at work but I think ill be able to manage. I'm definitely going to start by taking my vacation! I leave for Hawaii June 15th, the day after we graduate and plan to stay for little over a week. I have never been before so I'm so excited to go somewhere new! We plan on doing a lot of different activities but what I want to do most of all is lay out on the beach with my drink and kindle and just soak up the sun! Now if I had a million dollars I would probably be staying in Hawaii for much longer then a week. As soon as I got back I would probably be planning my next trip which would most likely be Ireland since I've always wanted to go there. After I had finished traveling I would probably use the rest of my money to pay for my masters degree. Money is really the only thing stopping me from continuing my education right now so if Dr. Schmoll would really be coughing up the dough I could be going back to school! Hopefully ill be able to get my masters one day but for now I'm okay with enjoying my summer and getting my life back again.

  21. 1. This summer I plan on visiting my sister and a regular basis. She lives in Long Beach and just have birth to a daughter this past Monday. So, I plan on visiting my niece and spoiling her while I can. I also have plans to go to Boston in July to visit family and watch a friend of mine on the Red Sox play against the Yankees. I also plan on going to Lake Tahoe for several days to enjoy my birthday and relax on a lake. I'm currently planning a fishing trip in August for a deep sea day trip. I do the fishing trips about every year and they are a really good time to enjoy with others. So these are the things I have planned but hopefully I can take advantage of a couple spontaneous adventures as well.

    2. If you were to give me a million dollars I would definitely go fly out to Bali and relax on the coast. They have perfect waves for surfing and it's a beautiful paradise to visit. I'd also make a couple more trips to random places I'd like to go. For instance, I'd go visit grandparents in Canada, go back to Hawaii and relax in paradise, go on a couple more deep sea fishing trips, buy a new car, and whatever else my mind is interested in. I would just like to travel alot because its really expensive too and with more money you can enjoy it to the fullest.

  22. 1. This summer I will be working ten hours with for four weeks with my amazing kids. I will also be looking for a second job on my days off for the rest of the summer. My sisters are also going to try to find an apartment or house to rent. We also have two of our cousins coming over for a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to spend some time with them. We haven't seen them in many years, so it will be very fun getting to know them again. I'm also looking forward to have some time to visit my parents and brother in Oxnard and spend some time with them, since that hasn't been possible lately.

    2. If you gave me a million dollars this summer, I would buy a house instead of renting one. I would also buy a new car to go along with my new garage. I'd also like to take a vacation with my whole family, because it has been a stressful year for all of us. We definitely deserve it.

  23. 1.This summer I plan to spend it with my newborn son before I have to return for the fall quarter. Today he is four weeks old and it’s really amazing how much my life has changed because of him. I am a first time mom and I am still learning the tricks of trade but I love it and him very much. He keeps me on my toes and is growing so fast that I can’t believe he is only 4 weeks old. I can’t wait for my first summer with my son and hopefully many more to come.
    2. I wish a million dollars would be given to me, which would be awesome! If I were given a million dollars over the summer I would do so many things. The first thing I would do is pay of the debt I have with school and credit cards, it isn’t that much but I would still like to pay it off. The second thing I would do is buy a house for me and my new small family, not just any house but a place where we could make a home for ourselves. The next that I would buy is a car for my family as well. I would also like to give some of the money to help out our extended family and take them all to Disney World in Florida. If I still had some left after that I would probably just save it and be careful with it.

  24. 1. This summer I plan to stay working the two jobs that I have. I hope to save up as much money as possible in order to attend a Masters program. I wish I could go out of town and have some fun but this summer I'm dedicating myself to work. At the end of my summer vacation I will do something small for myself before I start school again.
    2. If a million dollars were given to me I would first help my family by paying off their bills. I would buy my grandparents a house and buy a car for my grandmother as well. Secondly, I would go to Mexico and give shoes and clothes away to the unfortunate. There are many children running around without shoes, dropping out of school in order to provide the family with food. With this said I would also provide school supplies for those children, and would make sure that each family is getting fed. Lastly, I would open my own "sports arena" but bigger and much nicer. I want my ranch to me made for promotion. I want a bunch of horses and I would specify on rodeos, celebrities, and other big events and occasions.
