First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph.

WEEK TEN WRITING ABOUT YOU READ
Think about responding in two ways here this week:
First, which quote struck you most prodoundly?
--or--
Second, considering everything you have written, what was your best writing of the quarter?
The next real literary “rebels” in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of anti-rebels, born oglers who dare somehow to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse and instantiate single-entendre principles. Who treat of plain old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and hip fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Dead on the page. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that’ll be the point. Maybe that’s why they’ll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. Today’s risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the “Oh how banal.” To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows. David Foster Wallace
I will preface this writing with the disclaimer that I cannot stand David Foster Wallace's writing. I find it saccharine and melodramatic, boorish and lacking any kind of literary significance. At the same time, the sentiment he is expressing here is absolutely true and thought-provoking. The sad truth of our time is that the anti-establishment moment is now the mainstream. Accountants and attorneys ride "outlaw" Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and the angry young literary critics that attacked the system are tenured professors. Ironies pile on top of one each other until the even the direct acknowledgement of the existence of irony or meta-irony is looked at with condescending irony. Is the solution an rebellion of authenticity, as Wallace suggests? Maybe... or maybe we just need to make good art and abandon the obsession with authenticity in either of its extremes.
I have always struggled with writing. People think it something easy to do because you can write about anything and everything. They always tell me because I love to read, it should come easy. Unfortunely, it does not come easy, even writing two paragraphs can be a challenge. Sometimes the post in this blog can be difficult to write about. After reading a few posts it gives me an idea on things to write about.
I think my best writing for this class would be the in class essay. It was not the best grade I got in the essay portions, but I did better than I that I was going to do. It was a challenge to write an essay in an hour knowing the importance of the essay. The waiting process to find out the grade on it was difficult. I didn’t want to open the email when the results came in. I pass the essay portion and it felt great. It might not have been the highest grade, but it gave me some confidence in writing. I have a lot to learn and improve in my writing. The in class essay had me realizing I have improved. It helped with my insecurities of writing. I know I’m not the best writer, but I’m glad I am improving and will continue to improve.
We live not only in a world of thoughts, but also in a world of things. Words without experience are meaningless. Vladimir Nabokov
This quote stood out to me most because I do truly believe that "words without experience are meaningless". There are some individuals who can write very well and portray a scenery or emotion extraordinarily, but yet have never experienced that type of euphoria themselves. I find this hard to believe... how could a person write about a happy time, or a gathering without having experienced something similar? In my writing, I try my very best to incorporate my thoughts and emotions in whatever topic I may be writing about. I believe this quarter, my best writing was produced during our in class essay. Surprisingly when I am placed into a room where I know that at the end of the hour I am required to finish, my brain works aimlessly. Transitions come to me better, thoughts flow in order, and for the most part feel fairly confident when I am re-reading what I have produced on paper. Perhaps it is that confounding variable of time ticking that gets me going, or the notion of being on a schedule that motivates me; in either case, I generally prefer to sit and write with something inspiring me. Whether its time or knowing that I need to complete a task to succeed.
"Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly." Franz Kafka
First, which quote struck you most prodoundly? This quote struck me the secound most, but i think it has more meaning toward what this class did for me. Many times in english courses we have been hammered down with grammer and does and donts. for the first time it seemed ok to mess up in writting. in many of my assignments i felt i didnt have to worry about my spelling, grammer, or sentances. It was more about letting my soul speak for itself wihtout correcting it. Hopefully i dont get a back grade for doing as the instructor inteded this class to be for. To allow the soul to speak. Second, considering everything you have written, what was your best writing of the quarter? This last week has been the best and most truthfull writtin all quarter. Maybe because i had an actaul keyboard in front of me because others are done on my phone.
My favorite quote was: "Writers aren’t people exactly. Or, if they’re any good, they’re a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person."-- F. Scott Fitzgerald
I love this because I feel it captures how I feel when I write and precisely WHY I write. I feel there are so many different parts of me, and writing allows me to feel some sense of homogeny.
My best piece of writing this quarter was our final "Tipping Point" essay. I had fun creating and writing, and really enjoyed the freedom we were given as far as topic choice.
I really liked both of these prompts so here goes:
First, which quote struck you most profoundly? Second, considering everything you have written, what was your best writing of the quarter?
My best writing this quarter is hands down The Tipping Point assignment—not just because I’m writing this blog. Dr. Schmoll helped me tremendously; he made me analyze my ideas in depth instead of merely stating them, gave me constructive criticism, and even read some of my drafts at the last minute. Lastly he didn’t give up on me! He stayed with me from draft to finish, and I can gladly say that I’m done with The Tipping Point Assignment! Thanks Dr. S!
My favorite quote is “The first draft of anything is shit” by Ernest Hemingway, because I completely felt that way this quarter.
Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly. Franz Kafka
I chose this quote because all I could think about was when I read "The Trial" and "The Metamorphosis" by Kafka. I can say that I think that Franz Kafka's pieces of work are great, but I honestly cannot stand his writing. Why? He did not edit his own soul. His writings were ahead of his time and created the term "Kafkaesque". When you read his work it does not seem logical, only confusing. You will be going around in your head like a dog chasing its tail. He did not bend or water down what he wanted to say. No matter how much I say I dislike reading Kafka's work, he is correct. Do what you love and write about what you want, but do not let pressures change who you are and what you want to share with others.
The quote that struck me the most was by James Joyce:
"I’ve put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that’s the only way of insuring one’s immortality."
When I first read this quote I thought it was genius. It its one of my biggest dreams to write a book, but not just any book. I want to write a book that will make people think, and ponder, and wonder, and ask questions, and really think. I don't want to write a book like Twilight, or The Hunger Games, because in 10 years those books will all be a distant memory. The kind of book I want to write is the kind that will be studied and talked about in classrooms, a book that as James Joyce says will ensure my immortality.
The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it. -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I chose the quote, because it's the reason i'm here at CSUB. I have a letter to myself from the 3rd grade to an adult me, saying that I wanted to become a teacher, because I think that's what I was meant to do. I think teaching is my talent, more specifically, teaching Math is my talent, and I truly do find myself most happy when I am teaching or tutoring.
My best assignment this quarter would be the tipping point assignment. I chose this, because I truly enjoyed the reading, and found it fascinating. As I wrote about how the ideas from the Tipping Point could be implemented or used in my profession. I found myself thinking about the ideas constantly and wrote a few down, in a journal I have where I put ideas I would like to try when I become a teacher. I'm not sure if was best writing this quarter, but it was definitely the most beneficial.
We live not only in a world of thoughts, but also in a world of things. Words without experience are meaningless. Vladimir Nabokov
This quote struck me the most because it really make me think. I've never really thought about it before, but almost everything that we talk about is based on the experiences that we've had. We talk about things such as what happened to us at work that day, the funny thing that we read on the internet, the movie we went to see, etc. All of these are things that we have experienced. When put in a situation or conversation where it becomes necessary to discuss something we have not experienced, we speak by drawing on past experiences that we've had that relate to what the current topic is, and use those past experiences to predict what it is we may do in this experience that we've never had. This quote just really made me think, and that is why it stood out to me.
My favorite assignment was the Tipping Point paper. I felt like the paper was my own and that I had freedom in it due to the fact that I was able to pick what I wanted to write on.
The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe This quote struck me the most because I believe that everybody is born with a specific talent. That is what makes people different and what brings diversity to our society. To name a few, some people have a talent in singing or writing poems, and when people discover what their talent is it is what usually makes them happy. I would say that it is a fact that people achieve happiness in things that they love to do. When people discover their talent they usually want to have a job where they can incorporate that because that is what makes them the happiest. I know this because I would say that I have a talent for doing what I can to help people and make them better which is why I am going to school to be a registered nurse. It is what makes me the happiest. I believe my best writing of the quarter was The Tipping Point essay. I had the most fun writing it and I like that the essay was based on real things. It made me really think about things that have become tipping points and how fast they can take off.
The first draft of anything is shit. Ernest Hemingway
This quote struck me the most caught my attention immediately because I feel this relates to my writing when I first begin to write any papers. The way I begin to write is by writing anything that comes from the top of my head and work my way through by going back and rewording or changing sentences. The fact is that I do begin my drafts by putting anything that can be revised and improved.
The best writing I have done this quarter would be The Tipping Point essay because I was able to relate this topic to my career. I liked the way I was able to be more expressive and passionate about being in the healthcare profession and relating it to the reality world. I feel my writing for this paper was more detailed. This project was thought to be more relative to my life than any other essay I ever had to write before. The book was a fascinating book that I recommend it to a few people.
This quarter was somewhat of a challenge for me, especially when it came to writing. I feel like I have all kinds of creative ideas, but when it comes to producing it on paper I find that is one aspect I struggle the most. I feel that my writing has improved through our weekly postings because I was able to write a response back to some very creative topics. I would say that my best writing for this class was my in class essay. I consider it my best writing because it was the one essay that challenged me the most. I do not do well when it comes to timed essays and the in class essay was exactly that. It was very difficult for me to get all my ideas out on paper knowing I had a time limit. When time was finally up I was very upset because I honestly thought I was not going to pass the in class essay. The essay I produced was not my best essay to say the least. But when I found out that I passed it with a decent grade I was overfilled with much joy. As challenging as the essay was for me, I did better than I thought I would. And for me that was a huge accomplishment.
"The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I chose this quote because it reminds me of a saying people used tell me growing up. "Find a work that you love doing and it will never feel like you have worked a day." For me this is true. I used to work for a school district as a substitute teacher and an aide on the days I was not subing. I absolutely loved it. It never felt like work, I never dreaded going, and I was actually sad when I did have to miss.I do believe once you find something your good at and you love doing that you are willing to do it. I always searched for a hobby, but nothing ever struck me as fun. My daughter was born and bows were really expensive. So I bought so ribbon, thread, a hot glue gun, and some embellishments and I do it when I wake and before I go to bed. My daughter has more bows than she can wear. I send them back home to family and when my husband's niece comes over she always leave with a few. This quote is about passion. My best writing this quarter has been our final assignment. I find myself with writer's block often but this assignment was very easy for me to do. I don't know if it was because our assignments escalated to this or because I was more focused because I was afraid of the peer review. However, I think that my in-class essay was more creative and more out of the box than my usual writing. But I have recently learned that formula writing is not always the best option for most papers, that it is okay to let myself lose control a bit and let my writing speak for itself.
The first draft of anything is shit. Ernest Hemingway. This one struck me right away only because it made me laugh. It is very true as well. I'm by no means a writer so whenever I write a paper, or anything for that matter, I always re read it and think "this sucks". So it's nice to hear that the first draft of anything from anyone is most likely going to be crap. Since that is coming from a true writer it makes me feel much better about my work. Another quote that caught my eye was, writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words. Mark Twain. I like this because it makes writing sound so simple when obviously it is not, especially if you want to write well. I also like Mark Twain in general so I'm sure that's another reason I enjoyed his quote. When looking back on everything we have written this quarter I would have to say our first essay was my best. This was the restaurant review in which we had to describe our dinning experience. I enjoy descriptive essays the most and feel like this is the only writing I'm decent at. The types of books I read describe settings and characters really well so I like finding different words to use when I'm trying to describe things in my paper. I found the TC Boyle quite difficult for some reason even though it was not really in an essay format. Overall I really enjoyed this writing class because it pushed me to write in a different way. We also had a wide range of topics to write about which was different for me since all of the english classes I have taken have been extremly dull.
1. "The first draft of anything is shit". Ernest Hemingway I like this quote because it says so much about life. Everything that we do the first time far from perfect. It is considered the rough draft. This quote reminds me of writing a paper. When I write my first draft it comes out horrible, but after I get the concept of what I'm trying to write, it starts to flow easier. That is what life is all about. When we try a task for the first time we most likely do not get it right that time. But once we get into the rhythm, it may become a breeze. For example, first time parents may make so many mistakes with their new born baby but they will learn from it. They will reanalyze the experiences that they went through. cross out any of the unnecessary things that they did. Fix anything that just needs fixing.
2. My favorite assignment this quarter was the restaurant review. It was a great experience going out to eat and looking at the food in a different kind of way. It really made you look at your surroundings and observe everything. It really challenged me to use my creative side, which I do not really think that I have much of. Overall, I really enjoyed writing that review!
I'd have to say the quote that struck me the most was "The first draft of anything is shit. - Ernest Hemingway". This makes me feel better about some of my first drafts because a lot of them always seem like they can be better and when I the get revised they always turn out better. It also eases my mind that a perfect draft is rarely obtained in the first draft and even some of the best writer's have to write multiple drafts. All this makes sense though, usually the successors of the first version are always better in most cases. For example, programs and applications for phones and computers are usually always better because they fix what was wrong and add things that make it better just like writing.
Reading is more important than writing. Roberto Bolaño I believe reading is the most important thing a person can be able to do. Reading is the key to being able to learn and educate one self. Reading in comparison to writing, would help a person get through life a lot easier if they had the ability to read well. If a person can read then they have the tool to learn anything they want. My best writing this quarter was the short story in 6 words. I picked this as my best writing because it honestly had no grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors in it. I know I’m not a good writer and probably most of my other work in this class has errors. Writing is something that I ‘v been working on and that also why I took this class and not the GWAR. Even though it was a short assignment, it still qualifies as my best in my opinion because it had no errors. As I keep reading more often, my writing will improve as well as my confidence level of my writing ability.
My best writing assignment of this quarter was the Tipping Point essay. I think this was the best, because I really took the time to think about it and consider the topic. In the beginning, I was very lost on what trend to pick, but the idea came to me when I was looking through my tumblr. I started noticing that eating healthy had become a trend, and it was very obvious on my tumblr. I also realized that I was one of the people following the trend. Then I started remembering different TV commercials that advertise healthier eating eating styles. Thats when I decided I wanted to make that my topic. I started looking on the internet for more information on it. I think it turned out really well because, I really took the time to gather info. and organize it into an essay.
We live not only in a world of thoughts, but also in a world of things. Words without experience are meaningless. Vladimir Nabokov I think that Vladmir’s quote has to be my favorite, because I can relate to that. Most of the quarter we have written about things that we have experienced or things that we want to experience and we write about it. The questions asked by Dr. Schmoll have made me think about my life experiences and have forced me to type out thoughts that have been in my head. If people write about how to do something but have not yet done it themselves they have no credibility.
The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I agree with this quote because we are each given a special talent that others do not have; therefore we should take advantage of it. Allow your talent to represent you in a positive way by putting it to use. Many wish to have other peoples talents, so why put that special talent to waist. Show off your skills and represent yourself with the talent that distinguishes you from others. At the end you will find that your happiness comes from what you are capable of doing on your own without any other persons help.

ReplyDelete"The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
ReplyDeleteI chose this quote because it reminds me of a saying people used tell me growing up.

ReplyDelete1. "The first draft of anything is shit". Ernest Hemingway
ReplyDeleteI like this quote because it says so much about life.
ReplyDeleteJust noticed a typo in the 2nd sentence, ironic...
DeleteReading is more important than writing. Roberto Bolaño
ReplyDeleteI believe reading is the most important thing a person can be able to do.
ReplyDeleteWe live not only in a world of thoughts, but also in a world of things. Words without experience are meaningless. Vladimir Nabokov
ReplyDeleteI think that Vladmir’s quote has to be my favorite, because I can relate to that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this quote because we are each given a special talent that others do not have; therefore we should take advantage of it.
